President's Message

In its more than 20 years of existence, of dreams, aspirations, struggles and achievement, the Paralympic Council of Malaysia (PCM) has overcome a myriad of challenges. My appreciation to those who have been with us through thick and thin, in good times and bad times. Your support has certainly inspired us to strive further. The spirit of camaraderie and solidarity, which have been entrenched in PCM’s vision and objectives, will continue to be the principle guide in promoting the paralympic movement in Malaysia.

As we progress further, more challenges await in the horizon. PCM’s struggle for our athletes and the paralympic movement is far from over as we face more hurdles ahead of us. However, a strong foundation has been laid and, guided by our “Strength Beyond Belief” motto, I believe we will be able to progress further and receiving more recognition locally and internationally.

Having completed our journey under the GPN2010 (2001-2010) programme, PCM is striving to scale greater heights through various initiatives under the GPN2020 (2011-2020) blueprint. In the next 10 years, the GPN 2020 will provide us with opportunities to be a developed and strong organization, full of credibility, professionalism and integrity.

Since its’ formal inception in 1989, PCM has grown from strength to strength, but was not a bed of roses. There were little funding and assistance to help us through. We had to endure many obstacles, challenges and also internal and external threats. However, with the strong support received from many significant parties including the Government, various agencies, private bodies, sponsors and volunteers, we managed to battle through and fulfill the dream of our athletes to enjoy equal opportunities in sports.

Over the last 20 years, PCM has organised many competitions, conferences, discourses and seminars to promote paralympic movement and improve the quality of our athletes. This include organising competitions at the world, Asian, regional and local levels on regular basis. In terms of human resource development, many were trained as accredited technical and classifiers at both national and international level in most sports. And many sports leaders are also involved in the management of the sports at the world and regional level. Malaysian Paralympic leadership had been recognized by the International paralympic families to the extent that Malaysia managed to host both the Asean Para Sports Federation (APSF) and Asian Paralympic Committee (APC) office secretariat in Kuala Lumpur.

As we brace ourselves for more challenging times in the GPN 2020, the next 10 years, I seek the commitment from all members, our stakeholders and the public striving and working together to fulfill our dreams and aspiration. GPN2020 empowers the athletes and the sports to enhance further their status, image and esteem in society, through to the paralympic values of courage, determination, equality and inspiration. We could achieve if we stand united, strong in one voice.

On behalf of Paralympic Council Malaysia, I wish to express my appreciation to the government, our sponsors, related agencies, the media and our volunteers for all the support and contribution which will further inspire us to achieve greater excellence.

Thank you!

Dato’ Zainal Abu Zarin
Founding President
