The Malaysian Paralympic Council is pleased to announce that important new inroads building para-badminton have been made recently. The Badminton World Federation (BWF) Membership, at its annual general meeting (AGM) in Qingdao China on 28 May 2011, made the necessary changes to the BWF constitution to allow the integration of para-badminton into the BWF governance and management structure.
Following this, the membership of Para-Badminton World Federation (PBWF) voted unanimously in favour of joining the BWF on 3 June 2011 in Dortmund, Germany. The PBWF membership decided to dissolve itself and to assign to the BWF the responsibility for the following:
- governance of para-badminton
- day-to-day management of para-badminton and
- development of para-badminton on behalf of the world wide community of badminton players with a disability
This decision was the culmination of two years work by both organizations with the goal of integrating para-badminton into the governance and management structure of the one organization, namely the BWF.
The BWF AGM and Council, in recent meetings, reaffirmed its commitment to the governance and management of para-badminton and to developing para-badminton, with the goal for inclusion in the 2020 Paralympic Games.
The Badminton World Federation (BWF) is recognized by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) as the world governing body for the sport of badminton. The BWF is empowered by the IOC and the BWF’s 170 Members to govern the sport of badminton - 158 of these Members are National Badminton Federations under the IOC/NOC structure.
In partnership with its five Continental Confederations and its Members, the BWF promotes, presents, develops, and regulates the sport worldwide. The BWF has its headquarters in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, with an office in Lausanne, Switzerland.
