KUALA LUMPUR May 18 — Malaysian paralympic archers ended their campaign at the 1st APC Archery Cup Championships in Bangkok with a haul of two gold, a silver and a bronze.
According to a statement from the National Sports Council’s Paralympics Division here today, the results augured well for the team to qualify for the London Paralympics next year.
"This success serves as a benchmark to evaluate the team’s capability ahead of the World Championship in Italy in July which is a platform for qualifying for the London Paralympics,” the statement quoted team coach Amirullah Ahmad as saying.
In the nine-day championship held at the Rajamangala National Stadium in Bangkok, Malaysia’s gold were bagged by Mohammad Salam Sidik who defeated Jung Young Joo of South Korea 6-2 in the decider in the men’s ARW2 individual category and the trio of Mohamad Salam, Hasihin Sanawi and Mohd. Zafi Rahman who overcame Thailand’s trio 203 - 192 in the team category of the same.
However, Malaysia’s woman paralympic archer Nor Saadah Abdul Wahab had to settle for the silver when she lost 0-6 to Italy’s Elisabetta Minjo in the women’s ARW2 individual category.
The bronze was won by Mohammad Salam and Nor Saadah in the mixed doubles of the ARW2 category.
At the Para-Archery World Ranking Tournament in Nove Mesto Nad Metuji, Czech Republic, which offered a ticket to the London Olympics, last year, the national squad only won a silver medal. — Bernama
