The Athletes and Community Development Department (MMC) of the Malaysian Paralympic Council (MPC) organized a talent search programme for the northern region of Malaysia in May 2011. The programme was conducted in collaboration with the Department of Youth and Sports (PESRON ), Kedah.
The programme provided opportunities for people living with disabilities to engage in sports, and also to hone their talent in their chosen event. At the same time, the programme allows the challenged to have the same opportunities as able-bodied people do in sports.
The one-day event was considered a success, with a total of seven sports conducted; namely, badminton, athletics, chess, table tennis, archery, powerlifting and wheelchair tennis.
The event took place on 21 May at the Sports Complex, Youth and Sports Department, Alor Setar, Kedah. Some 150 participants took part in the event. These were from Pesron Kedah, Disabled Associations in Kedah, as well as individual who came on their own. The Department of Youth and Sports Kedah Director, Haji Aziz bin Haji Hamid, acted as the VIP for the event.
Besides lecturers, students from the Faculty of Sport and Recreation, Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM) Shah Alam, volunteered to help out in the event. The MPC hopes that programmes like these could be held every year so that the greater public will have more exposure to people living with disabilities (PWDs). In addition, the MMC believes that PWDs will feel valued and are not overlooked in sports.
